Steve was raised one of 4 boys, active in Boy Scouts and high school athletics.
Steve and his wife Trudy have been married 40 years and they have four children.
Steve graduated from high school in 1967. He enrolled in the University of Washington and graduated with a B.A. of Economics in 1971 and from the University Washington Dental School with a DDS in 1975.
Steve first practiced dentistry in Sydney, Australia. He later returned to Seattle, where he worked for the Seattle Indian Health Board and Group Health. He started a private practice on Bainbridge Island in 1978 where he practiced dentistry for 30 years. Steve served as President of the Kitsap County Dental Association in 1993. He served on the Washington State Dental Association’s Committee on Ethics, Peer Review and Legal Affairs from 1993 to 1997.
During college, Steve volunteered at Young Life summer camp . During the summer of 1969, he volunteered for Young Life Inner City at a youth center in Chicago. The Youth Center was in the area of the Black Disciples, a large African-American gang that controlled the streets around 53rd St.
Steve did not attend church regularly in college or his early working years.
When he returned from Australia in 1977, he was able to visit 23 countries. Like many of the Australian and New Zealand students at the time, he went overland through Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East and Europe. He wondered a lot about God during this trip, and without a firm educational background in the Bible questioned many of the beliefs he was raised with. He did not start attending a solid Bible teaching church until 1994. Salvation and true belief in Jesus Christ came quickly for both Trudy and Steve. Steve learned, for the first time, what it meant to be a Christian and gave his life to the Lord in 1995.
After becoming a Christian everything changed for Steve. Sailboat racing, skiing, and working, quickly took a backseat to finding a way to serve the Lord and learn more about him. Steve has helped with Alpha classes and sponsored Dave Ramsey classes. He has served as a Stephens Minister and for several years on his Church’s mission team. He has worked on his Church’s maintenance crew and served on the Church Elder board for 3 years, the last year as president. Later he served on his Church’s Regional Council for 6 years.
Steve and Trudy took their first mission trip with Josh McDowell to Morocco in 2008.
Steve first met Sheika and Haka in 2008. He travelled to Mongolia in 2011, 2016 with Trudy, 2018 and 2023. Steve has served on Sheika and Haka’s board since 2015.
